Watermelon Deaths Case Deepens as Poisoning Angle Under Investigation

The investigation into the deaths of a family has taken a new direction, with authorities now examining the possibility of poisoning in addition to initial suspicions of food contamination.

Abdullah Dokadia, a 45-year-old trader, his wife Nasreen (35), and their two daughters aged 13 and 16 reportedly fell ill after consuming watermelon on April 25. The family had earlier hosted a dinner for relatives, after which no illness was reported.

Hours after eating the fruit, all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhea and later died.

Medical Findings

Post-mortem reports showed unusual changes in vital organs, including discoloration of the brain, heart, and intestines. The presence of morphine in one case is also under review to determine its origin.

The Food and Drug Administration has stated that no confirmed link has been established between the watermelon and the deaths. Viscera samples are under laboratory analysis, and final findings are awaited.
