Political tensions in West Bengal have intensified after a close aide of the Bharatiya Janata Party was shot dead in a targeted attack in Kolkata, according to Beyond Time News.
The incident comes just days after the BJP secured a major electoral victory in the state assembly polls.
Attack on BJP Aide
Chandranath Rath, 41, a close associate of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was killed late Wednesday near his residence.
Police said motorcycle-borne attackers intercepted his vehicle before opening fire multiple times. Rath suffered critical gunshot injuries to the chest and was declared dead at Apollo Hospital.
West Bengal police chief Sidd Nath Gupta confirmed that the attackers used motorcycles with fake registration plates, which have now been seized. A search operation is underway to trace the suspects.
BJP Calls It “Cold-Blooded Murder”
BJP leaders strongly condemned the killing, calling it a “planned and cold-blooded murder.”
The party accused political opponents of involvement, further escalating tensions in the already volatile post-election environment.
Trinamool Congress Denies Allegations
The All India Trinamool Congress rejected any involvement in the incident. The party condemned the killing but also accused BJP-linked groups of targeting its supporters in separate incidents.
Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal Leaves Four Dead
Rising Political Tensions After Election Results
The violence comes shortly after the BJP won a historic mandate in West Bengal, securing 207 of 294 assembly seats in its first major victory in the state.
The state was previously governed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee since 2011. She has rejected the election outcome after also losing her own seat.
According to Beyond Time News, at least five people have been killed in post-election violence since the results were announced, deepening concerns over law and order in the state.
Opposition Accusations Intensify
Both major political parties have traded accusations over the recent killings, with the BJP alleging targeted violence and the TMC blaming BJP-backed groups.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security remains heightened across sensitive areas in West Bengal.
