Karachi: Progress on the long-delayed K-IV water project and Karachi’s broader water infrastructure came under review on Friday as Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah held a meeting with World Bank Country Director Bolorma Amgaabazar.
According to Beyond Time News, the meeting focused on improving Karachi’s water supply system, ongoing development projects, and efforts to speed up work on the K-IV augmentation scheme.
Push for Modern Water System in Karachi
During the meeting, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the Sindh government, with support from the World Bank, is working to establish a modern and sustainable water supply system for Karachi.
He stressed that the K-IV project is essential for meeting the city’s growing water needs, especially as population pressure continues to rise.
The chief minister directed officials to remove technical and administrative obstacles delaying the project and ensure its timely completion.
Key Discussions on Urban Development and Water Management
The meeting also covered several related issues, including:
- Water metering systems
- Improvement of infrastructure in informal settlements
- Reforms in the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC)
Officials emphasized the importance of transparent governance and efficient water management to address Karachi’s long-standing water shortages.
Senior provincial ministers, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, government officials, and World Bank representatives also attended the session.
K-IV Project: A Long-Delayed Mega Scheme
The K-IV water project, originally launched in the early 2000s, was designed to resolve Karachi’s chronic water shortage. However, the project has faced repeated delays due to funding gaps, design changes, and administrative hurdles.
The scheme aims to supply a total of 650 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to Karachi in phases. Currently, Phase I is being implemented by WAPDA, targeting a supply of around 260 MGD.
Despite renewed focus in recent years, concerns remain over slow progress and budget shortfalls.
Funding and Timeline Challenges
The project has also faced financial constraints. Last year, the federal budget allocated significantly less funding than required, slowing down progress.
Officials have repeatedly called for increased funding and better coordination between federal and provincial authorities to avoid further delays.
Earlier this year, planning authorities set a new completion target of December 2026, urging all departments to accelerate construction work.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has instructed relevant departments to speed up construction while carefully managing work in densely populated areas with existing utility infrastructure.
He said Karachi’s expanding population demands a reliable and efficient water system, adding that all ongoing projects must be completed on time and with high-quality standards.
Conclusion
The latest meeting highlights renewed focus on the K-IV water project as Karachi continues to struggle with water shortages. While progress is being made with international support, challenges related to funding, coordination, and execution remain key concerns.
According to Beyond Time News, both the Sindh government and the World Bank have reaffirmed their commitment to improving Karachi’s long-term water infrastructure.
