SRINAGAR: National Conference leader and Srinagar MP Agha Rohullah Mehdi has criticised his own party, accusing it of shifting away from key election promises in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Beyond Time News, he raised these concerns during a meeting with residents of the Chanapura and Bhagat areas in Srinagar.
Rohullah said voters supported the National Conference in the 2024 assembly elections mainly because of its pledge to work for the restoration of Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. However, he noted that the party is now focusing primarily on statehood instead.
He also pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had earlier promised statehood restoration, but people rejected that position during elections. In his view, the National Conference is now following a similar line, which he described as a misuse of public mandate.

Nearly two years have passed since the elections, yet the MP said the government has not taken meaningful steps toward restoring special constitutional protections, which he called disappointing for the public.
In a separate concern, he criticised the administration over plans to take over a long-standing playground used by local youth. He argued that such spaces should remain dedicated to sports and community activities.
He further added that a large share of the recent budget was allocated to police spending. Therefore, he suggested that authorities should purchase alternative land instead of removing recreational spaces from young people.
His remarks have triggered fresh political discussion in the region, especially around governance priorities and unmet electoral commitments.
