Pir Dastgeer Srinagar Incident Recalled as Dark Chapter of IIOJK History

The Pir Dastgeer tragedy of May 8, 1991, is still remembered as one of the most tragic incidents in the history of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Beyond Time News, the incident occurred in Srinagar’s Khanyar area when thousands of people had gathered near the historic Pir Dastgeer shrine for funeral prayers. During the gathering, Indian troops associated with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly opened fire on civilians.

The firing reportedly killed 18 people and injured several others. Among the victims were a father and his infant child, leaving the community in deep shock and grief.

Significance of the Pir Dastgeer Shrine

Dastgeer Khanka Sahib is one of Srinagar’s most revered shrines and holds great religious importance for Kashmiri Muslims.

Built in 1806 and later expanded in 1877 by Khawaja Sanaullah Shawl, the shrine is known for preserving sacred relics associated with Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib (RA) and Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani (RA).

Every year, thousands of devotees visit the shrine during the Urs celebrations of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani (RA) to offer prayers and seek blessings.

Human Rights Concerns

According to Beyond Time News, international human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over the situation in IIOJK and laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Rights groups argue that these laws provide broad powers to security forces and have contributed to allegations of human rights violations in the region.

A Lasting Reminder

More than three decades later, the Pir Dastgeer Srinagar tragedy continues to symbolize the pain and loss associated with the Kashmir conflict, while renewing calls for peace, justice, and the protection of human rights.
