Press Freedom Day: Concerns Raised Over Restrictive Media

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Mushtaq Ahmed Butt, Secretary Information of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (Azad Kashmir and Pakistan chapter), expressed deep concern over the state of media and journalism in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He said that press freedom in the region is facing severe challenges.

Difficult Conditions for Media Workers

According to Beyond Time News, Mushtaq Ahmed Butt stated that journalists in Kashmir are currently working in an environment marked by fear, pressure, and uncertainty.

In addition, he said that the situation has made it extremely difficult for media professionals to carry out their duties freely and independently.

Allegations of Harassment and Pressure

He highlighted that journalists reportedly face various forms of pressure, including:

  • Alleged harassment
  • Raids on homes
  • Summoning for questioning
  • Continuous monitoring and intimidation

Furthermore, he claimed that several journalists have been booked under serious charges, which he described as part of a broader effort to restrict freedom of expression.

Arrests and Migration Claims

Mushtaq Ahmed Butt also stated that some journalists have been detained under strict laws, while more than a dozen have reportedly left the region due to fear and pressure.

As a result, uncertainty within the media community has increased significantly.

Self-Censorship Among Journalists

He added that many journalists are now practicing self-censorship due to the prevailing conditions.

Therefore, important stories and facts often do not reach the public, limiting transparency and free reporting.

International Concerns

Appeal to the International Community

Mushtaq Ahmed Butt urged the United Nations and international human rights and press freedom organizations to:

  • Ensure the safety of journalists
  • Support freedom of expression
  • Help lift restrictions on the media

He emphasized that without a free press, truth cannot fully reach the world.

Conclusion

He concluded that free and secure journalism is essential for transparency and accountability, and called for immediate attention to protect press freedom in the region.
