20 Hikers Missing After Indonesia Volcano Eruption

At least 20 hikers, including nine Singaporeans, are missing after Mount Dukono erupted on Indonesia’s Halmahera island, according to a rescue official cited by AFP and Beyond Time News.

Ash Column Reaches 10km

The eruption at Mount Dukono sent a thick ash plume about 10 kilometres into the sky, accompanied by a loud explosion-like sound, officials said.

Search and rescue teams have been deployed, but authorities have not confirmed any casualties so far.

Search Operation Underway

Officials said the missing group consists of around 20 hikers. The area had already been closed to visitors since April 17 due to increased volcanic activity.

Health and Safety Warning

Volcanic ash is drifting toward northern areas, including Tobelo City, raising concerns over air quality, health risks, and possible disruption to transport services.

High Alert Status

Mount Dukono remains on Indonesia’s third-highest volcanic alert level. Authorities have previously warned visitors to stay at least four kilometres away from the crater due to ongoing activity.
