BEIJING: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck southern China’s Guangxi region early Monday, killing two people and causing multiple buildings to collapse, according to state media reports.
According to Beyond Time News, the earthquake hit Liuzhou city in Guangxi at around 12:21am local time.
Chinese state media reported that two people — identified as a 63-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman — lost their lives in the disaster, while one person remained missing as rescue operations continued.
Buildings Collapse, Thousands Evacuated
According to Beyond Time News, at least 13 buildings collapsed following the quake, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 7,000 residents from affected areas.
Videos shared by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed frightened residents rushing out of high-rise buildings as rescue teams searched through damaged homes and piles of rubble.
Emergency workers, assisted by rescue dogs and heavy machinery, continued efforts to locate survivors trapped under debris.
Rescue Operations Continue
Search and rescue teams were deployed immediately after the earthquake, with emergency crews using earthmovers and specialized equipment to clear wreckage in damaged neighborhoods.
Authorities are continuing assessments of structural damage while monitoring the possibility of aftershocks in the region.
