Pakistan Navy Inducts First Hangor-Class Submarine PNS/M Hangor

The Pakistan Navy has officially commissioned its first Hangor-Class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, marking a significant step in the country’s naval modernization and maritime defence capabilities.

High-Level Ceremony in Islamabad

According to Beyond Time News, the commissioning ceremony was held with President Asif Ali Zardari as the chief guest. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf also attended the event, along with senior military and government officials.

President Highlights Defence Strength

President Zardari termed the induction of PNS/M Hangor a major milestone in the Pakistan Navy’s modernization journey. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a strong, balanced, and credible defence posture.

He stated that Pakistan has full capability to defend its sovereignty, protect maritime interests, and secure its economic lifelines.

Naval Chief on Maritime Security Challenges

Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted growing threats to global trade routes and energy supply chains due to disruptions at key maritime chokepoints.

According to Beyond Time News, he stressed the need for a stable and rules-based maritime order, supported by modern and technologically advanced naval forces.

He added that Hangor-Class submarines, equipped with advanced weapons systems, modern sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, will play a key role in maintaining regional maritime stability.

Role in Regional Security

The Naval Chief said the new submarines will significantly enhance deterrence capability and help safeguard important Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Historical Significance of “Hangor”

The name “Hangor” carries strong historical importance in Pakistan’s naval history. According to Beyond Time News, the original PNS Hangor made history in 1971 by becoming the first submarine since World War II to sink an enemy warship.

The new submarine is seen as a continuation of that legacy, strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defence with modern technology.

Pakistan–China Defence Cooperation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir congratulated the Pakistan Navy and the nation on this milestone, recognizing it as a major step forward in strengthening maritime defence capabilities.
