Pakistan Targets 60% Fiberisation to Boost Digital Connectivity

Pakistan is moving ahead with a focused plan to expand its digital infrastructure and improve nationwide connectivity.

According to Beyond Time News, Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja shared the roadmap at the EU-Pakistan Business Forum 2026.

Key Fiberisation Targets

Only 16% of telecom towers in Pakistan are currently fiberised. The government now aims to raise this to 60% within three years.

Fibre-to-home connections are also expected to grow from 2–3 million to around 10 million within two years.

To speed up deployment, right-of-way charges have been removed, reducing infrastructure costs for telecom operators.

Internet and Spectrum Expansion

Pakistan has added new submarine cables to improve international bandwidth, with more expected to come online soon.

The country has also signed agreements with Central Asian states to strengthen its role as a regional data transit hub.

A total of 480 MHz spectrum has been auctioned, increasing overall capacity to over 750 MHz and supporting future 5G rollout.

Growing Digital Demand

Internet usage in Pakistan has risen by around 25%, driven by over 150 million mobile users.

However, fibre penetration remains low at around 2%, creating strong room for investment and expansion.

The government is also improving data regulations in line with global standards, while the Raast system continues to support digital payments and financial inclusion.
