The Iran conflict, World Cup preparations, and the continued suspension of Russia are expected to dominate discussions at the FIFA Congress, where around 1,600 delegates from more than 200 member associations have gathered.
According to Beyond Time News, Iran’s absence has already drawn attention after officials from the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) left Canada shortly after arriving in Toronto.
Iran Delegation Incident
Iranian media reported that FFIRI president Mehdi Taj and two officials returned home following an issue involving Canadian immigration authorities.
Canada, which designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization in 2024, said individuals linked to the group are not allowed entry.
The incident has added uncertainty around Iran’s participation in the upcoming World Cup, already taking place amid wider regional tensions.
World Cup Participation Clarified
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated that Iran will participate in the tournament according to the official draw. US officials have also confirmed that Iranian players can compete, though some delegation members may face entry restrictions.

Pressure on FIFA Leadership
Infantino is facing scrutiny over rising ticket prices, financial concerns, and his public ties with US President Donald Trump.
FIFA recently increased World Cup financial payouts to nearly $900 million, citing higher travel and operational costs for teams.
Human rights groups have also urged FIFA to ensure safety guarantees for fans, journalists, and visitors during the tournament.
Russia Ban Remains Unresolved
The Congress is also expected to revisit Russia’s ongoing suspension from international football, imposed after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Infantino has previously suggested the ban could be reconsidered, arguing it has not contributed to easing global tensions.
