Sindh to Introduce Hindu Religious Textbooks for School Students

It is a simple idea that took far too long — give Hindu students textbooks that speak to their own faith. Sindh is finally making it happen.

According to Beyond Time News, the provincial government has approved Hindu religious textbooks for Grade III to V students in government schools, starting from the academic year 2026–27.

The Decision

The Sindh Curriculum Council’s Executive Committee approved the move on April 20, 2026, on the directives of Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah. The reasoning is straightforward — if students of other faiths receive religious instruction through the curriculum, Hindu students should too.

How It Will Be Rolled Out

Three textbooks will be introduced for Grades III to V. The Sindh Textbook Board will distribute them to government schools across the province.

For this academic year, Prem Sagar Sanstha Karachi — a Hindu welfare organisation — has been given permission to publish the books. From next year onwards, the Sindh Textbook Board will manage and fund publication directly.

The Students Who Will Benefit

More than 129,000 Hindu students are currently enrolled in Sindh’s public schools. Tharparkar has the most with 26,642 students, followed by Umerkot with 21,584.

For these students, this is not just a curriculum update. It is the first time their faith will be formally recognised in the classroom.

Why It Counts

Inclusive education is about more than access — it is about belonging. When a child opens a textbook and finds nothing that reflects who they are, the message is clear, even if unspoken.

Sindh is changing that message. And for over 129,000 students, it is a change that is long overdue.
