Salik Hussain Pays Tribute to Workers on International Labour Day

On the occasion of International Labour Day, Chaudhry Salik Hussain praised the working class and highlighted their vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy and national development.

Workers Called Backbone of the Economy

According to Beyond Time News, the minister said that workers form the backbone of every nation. He paid tribute to labourers for their long struggle in securing labour rights and improving working conditions.

He stressed that no country can progress without the hard work and dedication of its workforce.

Government Focus on Labour Welfare

The minister said the government has placed worker welfare at the center of its policies. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international labour standards and key conventions of the International Labour Organization.

He also linked these efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially those focused on decent work, economic growth, and social protection.

Overseas Employment and Remittances

Chaudhry Salik Hussain highlighted progress in overseas employment programs. He said more than 762,000 Pakistanis secured jobs abroad over the past year.

He added that remittances reached nearly $40 billion, supported by job agreements with countries such as Italy, Qatar, South Korea, and Belarus.

Financial Support for Workers Increased

The minister announced higher financial assistance for workers and their families:

  • Marriage grant increased from Rs 400,000 to Rs 600,000
  • Death grant increased from Rs 800,000 to Rs 1 million

He said these steps aim to provide better financial security to labour families.’

Housing and Pension Reforms

The government plans to allocate homes and flats to industrial workers in Islamabad on a merit basis. It has also increased pensions under the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution.

Officials have introduced reforms to make the pension system more transparent and efficient.

Digital Systems for Transparency

The ministry has launched digital platforms, including the Workers’ Welfare Fund mobile app and the e-Protector system. These tools aim to improve service delivery and reduce corruption.

Authorities have also taken action against illegal recruitment agents by cancelling licences to protect workers from exploitation.

Vision for Worker Empowerment

The minister said the government envisions a fair and inclusive society where every worker receives dignity, protection, and equal opportunity.

He concluded that workers remain the true strength of the nation and assured continued government support for their welfare.
