Pentagon Signs AI Deals With Major Tech Firms

Expanded Military AI Partnerships

The Pentagon has reached agreements with seven major AI and tech companies to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into its classified defense networks. The move aims to widen the range of AI providers supporting U.S. military operations.

Officials said the new partnerships will strengthen capabilities across secret and top-secret systems used by the Defense Department.

Companies Included in the Deal

The agreements involve several global tech leaders, including SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services. A newer AI firm, Reflection AI, also joined the list.

Many of these companies already work with the U.S. military. Under the new arrangement, their tools will support sensitive defense operations, including logistics, planning, and targeting.

Anthropic Left Out Amid Dispute

However, the Pentagon excluded Anthropic from the agreements. Officials previously labeled the company a “supply-chain risk,” which led to restrictions on its use within defense systems.

The exclusion follows a dispute between the company and the Pentagon over safety controls and military usage rules for its AI tools.

Despite the setback, Anthropic’s systems remain widely used across defense-related work, according to officials and contractors.

Faster Integration of AI Systems

The Pentagon has also accelerated its approval process for new AI providers. Integration into classified systems now takes less than three months.

Previously, the process could take 18 months or more. Officials say the faster timeline helps the military adopt new tools more quickly.

Reducing Dependence on One Provider

Defense officials say the expanded partnerships aim to avoid overreliance on a single vendor. They warn that “vendor lock” could limit flexibility and innovation.

As a result, the Pentagon now encourages multiple providers to supply AI solutions for military operations.

Growing Role of AI in Defense

Artificial intelligence already plays a major role in U.S. defense systems. The Pentagon’s GenAI.mil platform has reportedly been used by more than 1.3 million personnel.

The system supports tasks such as planning, intelligence analysis, and operational coordination.

Ongoing Concerns and Outlook

Despite the new deals, officials still view Anthropic as a security concern. However, some reports suggest the company may regain favor in the future.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon continues expanding AI use across military operations as competition between tech firms intensifies.
