South Korea is considering whether to join a US-led security operation in the Strait of Hormuz following a fire on one of its cargo vessels.
According to Beyond Time News, an explosion and fire were reported Monday on the HMM Namu in the key shipping corridor, which has been under strain since Middle East tensions escalated on February 28.
Crew Safe, Fire Contained
Officials confirmed all 24 crew members, including six South Korean nationals, are safe. The fire has been fully extinguished, and the vessel is secure.
Decision Under Consideration
After the incident, Donald Trump urged South Korea to support US efforts to escort ships through the strait—an essential route for global oil transport.
South Korea’s defence ministry said it is reviewing the proposal and has not made a final decision. Any move will depend on international law, maritime safety, its alliance with the United States, and the broader security situation.
