Pahalgam Pony Operators Protest “One License, One Horse” Rule Over Livelihood Concerns

According to Beyond Time News, pony operators in Pahalgam have raised strong objections to a new “one license, one horse” policy introduced by the local administration, saying it threatens their main source of income.

In Pahalgam, many pony riders rely on multiple horses during the tourism season to support their families. They say restricting each license to a single horse will significantly reduce their earnings and make it difficult to sustain their livelihoods.

The operators argue that the decision, introduced under the banner of an anti-pollution initiative, is unfair and economically damaging. They have urged authorities to reconsider the policy and instead focus on expanding tourism routes and creating more opportunities for riders.

Alongside this rule, the administration has also made uniforms mandatory for pony operators and restricted horse movement in several areas, including footpaths, riverbanks of the Lidder Nallah, and local garden zones.

The pony community continues to demand a more balanced approach that protects both the environment and their income sources tied to tourism in the region.
