Tensions in the Gulf escalated on Tuesday as the United States and Iran exchanged accusations and limited military actions over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.
US Says Ceasefire Still Holds
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the ceasefire with Iran remains in effect and denied that Washington is seeking escalation.
He said a US-led operation, “Project Freedom,” is temporary and defensive in nature, aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the region.
According to Hegseth, the mission does not involve entering Iranian territory and is focused solely on safeguarding maritime traffic.
Iran Blames US for Escalation
Iranian officials rejected US accusations, claiming Washington is responsible for destabilising the region.
A military official denied that Iran planned any attack on Fujairah port, instead calling it a result of “US military adventurism.”
Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said US actions and allied operations have undermined shipping security and violated the ceasefire.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Intensify
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively disrupted amid ongoing hostilities, with reports of blocked or damaged vessels and competing claims from both sides.
Iran has accused the US-led presence of attempting to impose control over the waterway, while Washington says Iran is threatening commercial shipping.

Conflicting Maritime Reports
- Some ships reportedly crossed the strait under US naval escort
- Others remain stranded due to shallow or unsafe waters
- Iran and the US have both disputed control claims
Maritime agencies have issued conflicting updates, and independent verification remains limited.
Wider Regional Spillover
Meanwhile, violence continues in Lebanon despite a declared ceasefire, with ongoing Israeli strikes and Hezbollah counterattacks reported.
Conclusion
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains highly volatile, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining opposing narratives while maritime security in the region remains uncertain.
