New Delhi: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that a potential agreement to end the conflict with Iran could still materialise “today”, while stressing that Israel has the right to defend itself against attacks.
According to reports, Rubio made the remarks while speaking to journalists in New Delhi before departing for Agra during his official visit to India.
Rubio Optimistic About Possible Agreement
Marco Rubio said discussions regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz were progressing positively and that a “solid” proposal was currently under consideration.
He stated that Gulf countries supported the proposed arrangement and viewed it as important for regional and global stability.
Rubio also expressed confidence that Iran would enter serious and time-limited negotiations regarding its nuclear programme.
Trump Urges Negotiators Not to Rush
Rubio’s comments came a day after US President Donald Trump said negotiators should not rush into a deal with Iran.
According to reports, Trump stressed that Washington would not agree to what he described as a “bad deal”, adding that both sides should take time to finalise any agreement properly.
Background of the Conflict
The conflict began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, followed by retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran across the region.
A ceasefire between the two sides has remained in place since April 8, although negotiations over broader issues, including the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme, are still continuing.
Rubio Reaffirms Support for Israel
Rubio also reiterated that Israel had the right to respond to threats from Hezbollah.
He said Israel could act if Hezbollah launched missiles or attempted attacks, adding that such actions were understood even during the ceasefire period.
