Tropical Storm Jangmi Lashes Japan, 9 Injured and Thousands Left Without Power

Tokyo — Tropical storm Jangmi battered southwestern Japan on Tuesday, leaving nine people injured, cutting electricity to tens of thousands of homes, and triggering mass evacuations across the region.

According to Beyond Time News, Jangmi — downgraded from a typhoon — first hit Okinawa on Monday before pushing northward. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of dangerous flooding, landslides, and high waves as the storm moved across the country.

Strong winds brought down a 10-metre tree in Okinawa, and by Tuesday morning around 17,000 households on the island and over 30,000 in Kagoshima were without power.

The entire population of Miyazaki city, Kyushu — roughly 390,000 people — was ordered to evacuate.

Injuries and Official Warning

Government spokesman Minoru Kihara confirmed nine injuries in Okinawa, mostly caused by flying debris and people being knocked down by strong winds.

He urged residents to take evacuation alerts seriously and act without delay.

“Please remain vigilant and make sure you take action to protect your life,” he said.

ANA and Japan Airlines cancelled a combined 600 flights from Monday through Wednesday. Transport disruptions in Tokyo and surrounding cities are also expected Wednesday as Jangmi continues moving north.
