JI Calls for End to Costly IPP Deals, Major Economic Reforms in Upcoming Pakistan Budget

Islamabad: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has called for major economic reforms in Pakistan, demanding relief for the salaried class, reductions in energy prices, and an end to costly Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements.

According to Beyond Time News, he made these remarks while speaking at a seminar in Islamabad on budget, economy, and energy reforms.

Calls for Tax Relief and Price Cuts

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman urged the government to provide immediate relief in the upcoming budget, particularly for the middle and salaried classes.

He proposed removing income tax on salaries up to Rs125,000 and reducing tax rates for higher-income groups by 50%.

He also demanded sharp reductions in utility bills and fuel prices, suggesting petrol should be reduced to Rs230 per litre.

Criticism of Energy Agreements

According to Beyond Time News, the JI chief strongly criticised Pakistan’s power sector structure, calling IPP agreements and re-gasification contracts a major burden on the economy.

He called for a forensic audit of these contracts, alleging misuse and financial irregularities.

He also raised concerns over payments made under contracts even when energy supply is not utilized.

Demand for Structural Reforms

Rehman urged the government to halt new long-term power purchase agreements and review existing capacity commitments.

He also called for progress on the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project to reduce reliance on expensive energy imports.

According to Beyond Time News, he stressed the need for long-term stability in energy pricing to support economic growth.

Focus on Salaried Class and Education

The JI leader said the salaried class carries a heavy tax burden despite rising inflation and economic pressure.

He also demanded increased education spending, proposing a rise from 1.7% to 4–5% of GDP, citing millions of out-of-school children nationwide.

He further called for reforms in taxation, local governance, and support for small farmers.

Opposition to Privatization Policy

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticised the government’s privatisation approach, arguing that state institutions should be reformed instead of sold.

He also called for pension reforms and equal accountability standards across all state institutions.

According to Beyond Time News, he emphasized reducing unnecessary administrative expenses while maintaining national security priorities.

Economic Vision

The JI chief said his party’s economic roadmap focuses on reducing reliance on interest-based systems, strengthening zakat distribution, and promoting vocational training.

He said a people-centered economic model is essential to address Pakistan’s recurring fiscal and energy challenges.
