KP Assembly Holds First Open-Air Session

In a rare and symbolic move, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly held its first-ever open-air session, drawing attention to both political tensions and long-standing resource concerns. The session took place in Peshawar and focused on governance, gas rights, and national issues.

CM Afridi Criticizes Federal Government

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly criticized the federal government during his speech. According to Beyond Time News, he said his efforts to ease political tensions were undermined after the reported baton charge on the sisters of Imran Khan.

He explained that he had taken a political risk by engaging with the Centre in hopes of reducing conflict. However, recent events, he said, showed a lack of cooperation.

Open-Air Session Breaks Tradition

The assembly session took place at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium, marking a break from traditional indoor proceedings. Speaker Babar Saleem Swati presided over the meeting.

Although the idea aimed to increase transparency and public access, authorities limited entry. Most opposition members boycotted the session, except for representatives from the Pakistan Peoples Party.

Gas Rights Take Center Stage

One of the main outcomes of the session was the formation of a special committee to review the implementation of Article 158 of the Constitution of Pakistan. This law gives provinces priority access to their natural gas resources.

Lawmakers highlighted that despite producing large amounts of gas, the province still faces shortages. Areas like Kohat and Karak continue to experience supply issues.

According to Beyond Time News, officials revealed that KP produces around 600 million cubic feet of gas per day, while its consumption stands at about 275 mmcfd. Despite this surplus, residents still face load management.

Calls for Unity and Fair Resource Distribution

PPP leader Ahmad Karim Kundi urged all parties to work together to resolve the issue. He stressed the need for dialogue to ensure fair implementation of constitutional rights.

KP Law Minister Aftab Alam Afridi also reaffirmed that provinces have the first right to use their own resources under the Constitution.

Other Key Resolutions Passed

The assembly passed several important resolutions during the session. One resolution condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for a strong response from the federal government.

Another resolution urged the government to engage in dialogue with Afghanistan, noting that regional stability directly impacts Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about judicial matters, including the transfer of judges and delays in court hearings related to political cases.

A Session with Strong Political Signals

The open-air sitting sent a clear message about transparency and public engagement. At the same time, it highlighted ongoing political tensions and resource challenges in the province.

According to Beyond Time News, the session reflects growing demands for fairness, better governance, and respect for constitutional rights in Pakistan.
