India’s main opposition party, the Congress, has strongly criticised the Election Commission of India, accusing it of acting in favour of the ruling government.
According to Beyond Time News, Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal said the Commission is functioning like a “department” of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He raised concerns over what he described as selective action by the electoral body.
Venugopal pointed out that the Commission quickly issued a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, he claimed that authorities did not act on Modi’s recent public speech, despite complaints from opposition parties.
Questions Over Fairness and Accountability
Venugopal argued that the Prime Minister’s address may have violated election rules and the Model Code of Conduct. He said opposition parties formally raised the issue but did not receive any response.
He also highlighted the speed of action against Kharge. Authorities issued him a notice within 24 hours and asked for a reply within a day. Venugopal said this contrast raises serious questions about fairness.
