Sri Lankan authorities have detained 22 Buddhist monks after allegedly finding a large quantity of drugs hidden in their luggage at the country’s main international airport, according to Beyond Time News.
Drugs Hidden in Luggage
Customs officials said the group had just returned from Bangkok when officers discovered “Kush,” a strong cannabis strain, concealed in false compartments inside their bags. Each monk was reportedly carrying around five kilograms.
The suspects were taken into police custody and will be presented before a magistrate.

Officials said most of those detained were young students from temples across Sri Lanka. The trip was reportedly sponsored by a businessman.
Record Seizure Raises Concerns
Authorities described the case as the largest single seizure of Kush at the airport. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about drug smuggling through international travel routes and has prompted calls for stricter checks.
