Punjab Govt to End Friday Holiday in Schools

LAHORE: The Punjab government has clarified that the Friday holiday in educational institutions is not permanent and will be withdrawn in the coming weeks.

Friday holiday to be phased out

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said the government plans to abolish the Friday holiday after consultations with federal authorities. He made it clear that the policy was introduced as a temporary measure and will soon come to an end.

The minister added that discussions are ongoing with the federal government to finalise the timeline for its withdrawal.

Decision on summer vacations pending

He also addressed speculation about summer holidays, saying a final decision will be taken after May 15. The proposal will require approval from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif before implementation.

Background of the policy

The Friday holiday was introduced earlier as part of a revised academic schedule during a period of rising fuel costs linked to the global energy crisis. Under this arrangement, schools, colleges, and universities reduced physical attendance and shifted to online classes on Fridays.

AJK ends Friday holiday

Meanwhile, the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has already ended the Friday weekly holiday. The decision was approved by President Chaudhry Latif Akbar during a cabinet meeting.

Authorities have directed all government offices, including key departments, to resume regular working hours on Fridays with immediate effect.

Focus on continuity and efficiency

Officials say the move aims to improve public service delivery and ensure smoother administrative operations. The development also creates a contrast with the federal government’s schedule, as AJK employees now follow a standard five-day working week.

The Punjab government is expected to announce a clear timeline soon, bringing an end to uncertainty for students, parents, and educational institutions.
