New collaboration aims to improve disaster prediction, climate modeling, and national resilience
According to Beyond Time News, two key institutions in Pakistan—the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM)—have signed a new agreement. They will work together on climate research and disaster risk reduction.
The partnership will focus on climate modeling, disaster prediction, and early warning systems. It also aims to strengthen Pakistan’s capacity to respond to natural disasters.
Agreement Signed at NDMA Office
The signing ceremony took place at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters in Islamabad. SDPI Executive Director Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri and NIDM Executive Director Air Commodore (retd) Tanveer Piracha signed the agreement.
Both institutions agreed to improve coordination. They also committed to sharing research and technical knowledge.
NDMA Warns About Rising Climate Risks
NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik said disasters are becoming more frequent and severe. He stressed that Pakistan must upgrade its disaster management systems.
He added that NDMA is introducing new technology-based solutions. For example, the National Emergencies Operation Center now tracks disaster risks in real time.
In addition, he said these systems help improve forecasting at both national and regional levels.
SDPI Highlights Need for Strong Data Systems
Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri praised NDMA’s data systems. He said they help policymakers make better decisions.
He also stressed that disaster management needs joint efforts. Governments, researchers, and institutions must work together.
Moreover, he proposed that SDPI experts could teach at NIDM. This step would improve training and knowledge sharing.

Areas of Cooperation
The agreement covers several key areas. These include:
- Joint research on climate change and disasters
- Policy development and training materials
- Workshops and simulation exercises
- Internships and professional exchange programs
Both sides will also publish research together. They aim to improve disaster preparedness across Pakistan.
Focus on Long-Term Resilience
Air Commodore (retd) Tanveer Piracha called the agreement an important milestone. He said institutions must adopt new and innovative approaches.
He also noted that global funding for disasters is shrinking. Therefore, Pakistan must rely more on local solutions.
Finally, both institutions said they will work together to strengthen resilience. They aim to reduce risks and improve disaster response in the future.
