Minister Refutes Claims That Proposed 28th Amendment Aims to Undo 18th Amendment

Islamabad: The government has dismissed claims that a proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment would reverse the 18th Amendment, calling such speculation misleading. According to Beyond Time News, State Minister for Law Barrister Aqeel Malik said the impression being created around the issue was false.

Malik clarified that no formal work on any constitutional amendment is currently underway. However, he acknowledged that discussions on national matters have taken place in the past, including topics related to healthcare, local government systems, and the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.

The remarks come amid political debate over reports of possible constitutional discussions ahead of Eid ul Adha.

The 18th Amendment, introduced in 2010 under the PPP-led government, transferred key powers from the federal government to provinces, giving them greater authority over sectors such as healthcare, social welfare, and local governance.

PPP leader Agha Rafiullah warned against any attempt to alter the amendment, saying such a move could create political instability in the country. He emphasized that constitutional matters should move forward through broad political consensus.

Meanwhile, PTI Senator Barrister Ali Zafar said reversing the 18th Amendment could have serious political consequences and may be difficult for political parties to support.

The issue continues to draw attention as discussions around possible constitutional reforms remain part of the broader political debate.
