NDMA warns of heavy rains, thunderstorms across Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and isolated hailstorms in several parts of Pakistan during the next 12 to 24 hours.

According to the advisory, the current weather pattern matches forecasts issued earlier by the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC). Authorities have already reviewed pre-monsoon preparedness measures through a national conference held on the prime minister’s directions.

Rain and thunderstorms expected in multiple regions

The NDMA said strong winds, thunderstorms, and rain are likely in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In Punjab, the affected areas may include Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Sahiwal, and Okara.

Authorities also expect heavy rainfall and isolated hailstorms in Islamabad and nearby areas.

Northern areas face flood and landslide risks

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rain and thunderstorms are expected in Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Diamer, Astore, Ghanche, Shigar, Kharmang, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Haveli, Poonch, and Rawalakot.

The NDMA warned that rising temperatures could accelerate glacier melting in northern regions. As a result, authorities fear glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods, and landslides in mountainous areas.
