NDMA Warns of Extreme Heat Across Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan Until May 26
Islamabad: Pakistan is preparing for an intense heatwave as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of extremely high temperatures from May 19 to May 26.
According to Beyond Time News, several regions across Sindh, southern Punjab, and eastern Balochistan are expected to experience temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius during the coming days. Authorities have urged citizens to take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.
The NDMA stated that rising temperatures, combined with humidity in some areas and dry weather conditions in others, could increase health risks for vulnerable communities.
Major Cities and Districts Likely to Face Severe Heat
The heatwave is expected to affect multiple districts across Pakistan, especially in Sindh, where weather conditions may become particularly harsh.
In Sindh, districts likely to experience extreme temperatures include Hyderabad, Karachi, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Khairpur, Kashmore, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Badin, Matiari, Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushahro Feroze, Tharparkar, and Qambar Shahdadkot.
Meanwhile, several areas in Balochistan are also expected to remain under severe heat stress. These districts include Turbat, Sibi, Lasbela, Panjgur, Jhal Magsi, Nasirabad, Uthal, Dera Murad Jamali, Usta Muhammad, Jaffarabad, and Kachhi.
In Punjab, authorities warned that Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, Bahawalnagar, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Sargodha, and Lahore could also face unusually high temperatures.

Health Risks Increase During Heatwave
Officials warned that prolonged exposure to intense heat can cause serious health complications, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Children, elderly citizens, outdoor laborers, and individuals with existing health conditions face the highest risk during extreme weather conditions.
Health experts advised people to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours and drink plenty of water throughout the day. They also recommended wearing light-colored clothing and staying indoors whenever possible.
Authorities Activate Emergency Measures
The NDMA directed local administrations to activate heatwave emergency plans in vulnerable districts. Authorities have also been instructed to establish cooling camps, ensure uninterrupted water supply, and improve emergency medical response services.
In addition, rescue teams and healthcare facilities have been placed on alert to handle possible heat-related emergencies during the week-long weather spell.
Officials emphasized the importance of public awareness and urged citizens to follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
Experts Warn of Climate-Related Weather Extremes
Environmental experts say Pakistan has experienced increasingly intense heatwaves in recent years due to changing climate patterns and rising global temperatures.
They noted that urban areas often become even hotter because of concrete infrastructure, traffic congestion, and limited green spaces. As a result, cities may experience stronger heat stress compared to rural regions.
Experts believe that long-term planning, improved water management, and climate adaptation strategies will become increasingly important to deal with extreme weather events in the future.
Heatwave Safety Tips for Citizens
Authorities shared several important safety guidelines for the public during the heatwave period:
- Drink plenty of water regularly
- Avoid outdoor activities during afternoon hours
- Wear loose and light-colored clothes
- Use umbrellas or caps when outside
- Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles
- Seek immediate medical help in case of dizziness or heatstroke symptoms
- Check on elderly family members regularly
