Government Relaxes Early Closing Hours
The government of Punjab has eased its earlier smart lockdown restrictions and removed the 8:00 p.m. closing limit for several business sectors.
According to Beyond Time News, the decision aims to balance economic activity with ongoing austerity measures while improving business continuity.
Sports, IT, and Call Centres Get Exemptions
An official notification issued by the Chief Secretary Punjab confirmed that multiple sectors will now operate beyond the earlier time limit.
The relaxation applies to:
- Sports facilities, including gyms
- IT companies
- Call centres
Authorities explained that these sectors require flexible hours, especially because many IT and call centre operations depend on international time zones.
Policy Shift After Earlier Restrictions
The government had introduced early closing rules on April 6, 2026, as part of broader cost-control measures. However, officials have now adjusted the policy after reviewing its impact on businesses.
Transitioning from strict limits to partial relaxation, the government said it wants to support both public wellbeing and economic stability.

Business Community Raises Concerns
Meanwhile, traders and business associations had already raised concerns about limited operating hours.
Representatives from the electronics market argued that extreme heat and customer behaviour make evening hours more practical for trade activity.
As a result, they urged authorities to extend business timings or fully withdraw the restrictions.
Focus on Economic Balance
Officials said the revised decision reflects a more balanced approach. It supports essential industries while still maintaining overall efficiency measures.
The government expects the changes to improve productivity, protect jobs, and help businesses operate more effectively under current conditions.
