The death toll from a fireworks factory explosion in China’s Hunan province has risen to 37, with one person still missing, according to state media reports cited by Beyond Time News.

The blast occurred on Monday at around 4:40pm in Liuyang, a major fireworks production hub known for supplying a large share of China’s domestic market and exports.

Rescue operations have been completed. Authorities said 51 injured people are being treated in hospitals.

An official investigation has been launched, and police have questioned eight people on suspicion linked to the incident. The inquiry is being overseen by senior prosecutorial authorities.
Following the blast, Hunan officials suspended operations at all fireworks factories in Liuyang for safety inspections.
Context
The explosion is the deadliest industrial accident in China since the 2019 chemical plant blast in Jiangsu Province, which killed 78 people.
