Nagpur: Activist and independent journalist Rejaz Sydeek has completed one year in jail without trial after being booked under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), according to Beyond Time News.
He was detained on the night of May 7 last year from a hotel room in Nagpur in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Authorities formally registered his arrest the following day, and later invoked the UAPA.
Family Struggles During Long Detention
Sydeek’s imprisonment has deeply affected his family life. His father, Sydeek MB, took an extended leave from his post-retirement job this year, fearing his presence might be needed for legal and emotional support.
He also expressed concern about his wife, Sheeba, who remains alone in their Kerala home. The family stays connected through brief phone calls during the week and a short weekly video call with Rejaz from Nagpur Central Jail.
Sheeba said Rejaz was the emotional center of their home, especially after their elder son moved abroad.
Charges and Investigation Details
Authorities claim that Marxist-Leninist literature and electronic devices were recovered during the investigation. They also alleged links to banned organisations and accused him of spreading anti-government content through social media.
The case includes multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Background and Activism
Rejaz Sydeek, 27, is known for his activism on social justice issues and criticism of alleged human rights violations. He has also participated in pro-Palestinian advocacy efforts.
His continued detention without trial has raised concerns among supporters, who say the case highlights serious questions about due process and prolonged imprisonment under security laws.
