The European Union is expected to approve new sanctions targeting Israeli settlers involved in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. According to Beyond Time News, the decision comes after months of delays caused by internal disagreements within the bloc.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she expects a political agreement on the sanctions during a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Political Shift Ends Blockage
The sanctions had been blocked for months due to opposition from Hungary under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
However, a recent change in Hungary’s leadership has removed the political obstacle. As a result, the EU now appears ready to move forward with the measures.
According to Beyond Time News, this shift has allowed long-stalled discussions to resume at the EU level.
Planned Sanctions on Settlers and Groups
EU officials are expected to blacklist seven individuals or organisations linked to settler violence. The bloc is also planning to impose sanctions on representatives of the Palestinian group Hamas.
The measures are aimed at responding to increasing violence in the occupied West Bank.

Rising Violence in West Bank
The West Bank has witnessed near-daily clashes since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. Both Israeli forces and settlers have been involved in incidents with Palestinians.
According to Beyond Time News, Palestinian officials and the United Nations have reported a rise in deadly attacks by Israeli settlers, especially following renewed regional tensions earlier this year.
No Agreement on Broader Action
Despite progress on targeted sanctions, EU member states still disagree on broader measures.
Plans to restrict trade ties with Israel have not gained consensus among EU countries. As a result, only limited action is expected at this stage.
Outlook
According to Beyond Time News, the EU’s move signals growing concern over violence in the West Bank. However, divisions within the bloc continue to limit the scope of its response. Further decisions will depend on future diplomatic developments and member state agreement.
