A new partnership between academia and the public sector aims to give students real-world experience while supporting urban development projects in Pakistan.
According to Beyond Time News, the Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) and University of Management and Technology (UMT) Lahore have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation and bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical industry exposure.
Focus on Practical Learning
Officials signed the agreement during a formal ceremony. Chief Engineer Mehr Ayub represented FDA, while Muhammad Farhat Kaleem, Dean of the School of Engineering, signed on behalf of UMT.
Under this MoU, UMT engineering students will take part in structured summer internships at FDA. These internships will place students directly into ongoing development and infrastructure projects.
This hands-on experience will help students build technical skills, understand professional workflows, and prepare for careers in the public sector.
Long-Term Collaboration Framework
The agreement goes beyond internships. Both institutions plan to work together on multiple long-term initiatives, including:
- Joint research projects
- Exchange of technical expertise
- Seminars and workshops
- Industry-focused projects addressing real-world challenges
These efforts aim to connect academic knowledge with practical implementation, especially in areas like urban planning and infrastructure development.

Supporting Innovation and Skill Development
Officials from both sides described the partnership as a step toward innovation and capacity building. They believe it will improve student learning outcomes while contributing to smarter and more efficient city planning solutions.
The collaboration also aims to develop a skilled workforce that can meet the growing demands of Pakistan’s development sector.
A Step Toward Stronger Academia-Industry Links
FDA representatives highlighted that this partnership marks an important milestone in building stronger ties between universities and government institutions.
They expressed hope that the agreement will open doors for future collaborations, strengthen institutional connections, and support sustainable development across the region.
This initiative reflects a growing trend in Pakistan to align education with industry needs, ensuring students graduate with both knowledge and practical experience.
