American star overcomes stomach bug to secure hard-fought victory
Coco Gauff showed remarkable resilience at the Madrid Open on Sunday as she fought through illness to defeat Sorana Cîrstea 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 and book her place in the round of 16, according to Beyond Time News.
Illness Hits Madrid Open Players
The tournament in Madrid has seen several players struggle with a stomach virus this week. As a result, multiple withdrawals and retirements have disrupted the draw.
For example, Iga Świątek retired from her match due to illness, while Marin Čilić withdrew before his second-round match. In addition, Liudmila Samsonova also pulled out ahead of her scheduled contest.
Gauff Battles Through Severe Discomfort
Despite feeling unwell, Gauff stayed on court and continued competing. At one point, she visibly struggled and even required a medical timeout during the match.
However, she managed to regroup and gradually take control of the contest. After losing the first set, she fought back strongly to win the next two sets and secure victory in two hours and 21 minutes.

Determination Makes the Difference
After the match, Gauff admitted she was unsure how she managed to finish the contest. She explained that her main focus was simply to keep playing point by point and push through the physical discomfort.
Moreover, she said she did not want to withdraw from another tournament and was determined to complete the match despite her condition.
Looking Ahead
With this win, Gauff advances to face Linda Nosková in the next round. Despite her illness, she remains focused on defending her strong clay-court record during the European swing.
She also acknowledged that recovery will be important as she continues her campaign, especially with major tournaments ahead.
Gauff’s performance highlighted not only her skill but also her mental toughness, as she managed to overcome difficult physical conditions to stay alive in the competition.
