KP Targets Food Self-Sufficiency by 2030, Announces Expanded Investment in Storage and Agriculture

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has said the provincial government is working to achieve food self-sufficiency by 2030 through reforms in agriculture, improved storage systems, and strengthened food safety measures.

According to Beyond Time News, he shared the government’s plan while addressing a ceremony in connection with World Food Safety Day at the Chief Minister’s House, organised by the KP Food Safety and Halal Food Authority.

Plan for Modern Wheat Storage

CM Afridi said the upcoming provincial budget will prioritise the food sector, with increased funding for modern, technology-based wheat storage facilities.

He said improved storage capacity is essential to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure stable food supply throughout the year.

Officials said the initiative is part of efforts to modernise the agriculture sector and strengthen the supply chain.

Focus on Food Safety

The chief minister said food safety awareness is increasingly important for public health.

He added that the KP Food Safety and Halal Food Authority has improved monitoring and enforcement, helping ensure safer food across the province.

Concerns Over Development Projects

CM Afridi raised concerns over delays in key development projects, saying wheat supply arrangements from Punjab to KP had been affected and communication gaps remained unresolved.

He also highlighted delays in the Chashma Right Bank Canal (CRBC) project, calling it important for irrigation and agricultural growth.

He said KP has allocated Rs3 billion for the project, while federal funding has not yet been released as promised.

Infrastructure Issues

He said the Northern Bypass project has been funded through Rs4 billion in provincial financing, while the Peshawar Bus Terminal remains non-operational due to pending approval.

He added that a dam project in Swat is ready, but federal clearance for foreign engineers is still awaited.

Call for Fair Resource Sharing

The chief minister said delays in development and resource issues are affecting the province.

He said KP produces over 500 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas, while its consumption is much lower, affecting local supply needs.

2030 Roadmap

CM Afridi said the government is following a long-term plan focused on food security and agricultural improvement.

He added that departments have been directed to align planning with the 2030 self-sufficiency target.
