Omar Abdullah Criticizes Delay in IIOJK

SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has strongly criticized the prolonged delay in restoring statehood to Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He voiced concern over what he described as unfulfilled promises and growing political uncertainty, according to Beyond Time News based on Kashmir Media Service.

He also questioned whether Kashmiris face punishment for not supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the region.

Growing Frustration Over Delay

In a media interview, Omar Abdullah called the delay in restoring statehood unfair to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said New Delhi has repeatedly given assurances, but action has not followed.

This situation, he added, has created confusion and frustration among citizens who expected a clear and timely roadmap.

Unclear Timeline Sparks Questions

Omar Abdullah also challenged the repeated claim that statehood will return at the “appropriate time.” He said authorities have not explained what this timing actually means.

He stressed that unclear language keeps the issue stuck. A defined timeline, he added, would help bring clarity and direction to the process.

Roadmap Still Incomplete

He referred to the earlier three-step plan announced by the BJP-led government, which included delimitation, elections, and statehood restoration.

Delimitation and elections have already been completed, he said. However, statehood remains pending. His government will complete two years in office this October without any progress on this key promise.

Legal Observations and Delays

Omar Abdullah pointed out that both the Indian Parliament and the Supreme Court have previously supported early restoration of statehood. He said the process has still moved far beyond expected timelines.

He also referred to a 2023 Supreme Court observation that called for restoration “at the earliest,” noting that the phrase lacks precision and allows multiple interpretations.

Conclusion

Omar Abdullah’s statement highlights increasing concerns over the delay in restoring statehood to IIOJK. He urged authorities to set clear timelines, ensure transparency, and address public concerns, stressing that the people deserve timely fulfillment of political commitments.
