ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert, warning that temperatures will rise sharply in several parts of the country over the coming days.
Heatwave expected in southern regions
The Met Office said mild heatwave conditions will develop in southern Pakistan from April 29 to May 3. It expects intense heat mainly in South Punjab, Upper Sindh, and Balochistan.
Temperatures may rise four to six degrees Celsius above normal. In some plain areas, mercury levels could reach between 43°C and 45°C.
Public advised to take precautions
The PMD has advised people to avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. It also urged citizens to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.
Health experts warned that extreme heat could affect children, elderly people, and patients more severely, so extra care is necessary during this period.

Weather systems and regional impact
While southern regions will face heat, upper parts of the country may stay relatively cooler. Westerly weather systems will influence these areas between April 27–29 and again from May 3–5.
These systems may temporarily reduce temperatures by two to four degrees Celsius. However, the PMD cautioned that heat intensity is likely to rise again after May 1.
Seasonal trend of rising temperatures
Climatological data shows that May and June are typically the hottest months in Pakistan. South Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan often experience extreme conditions during this period.
In severe heatwaves, temperatures can even reach up to 52°C in some areas, while normal highs usually remain between 43°C and 45°C.
