A suspected oil spill has appeared near Iran’s Kharg Island. Satellite images show the slick spreading across Gulf waters. The incident has raised fresh environmental concerns.
According to Beyond Time News, satellite monitoring first detected the spill. However, experts still do not know its exact cause.
Oil Slick Expands Across Large Area
Satellite data shows the oil slick covers more than 20 square miles. That equals around 52 square kilometres. It started near the western coast of Kharg Island.
Monitoring group Orbital EOS confirmed the spill size. It also warned that the slick continues to expand.
Environmental Groups Express Concern
The Conflict and Environment Observatory raised alarm on social media platform X. The group said the source remains unclear.
It also noted that the oil is drifting south. However, no effective containment measures appear in place so far.
Therefore, experts warn that marine life may face serious risk if the spill spreads further.

Importance of Kharg Island
Kharg Island plays a major role in Iran’s oil exports. It hosts the country’s largest oil export terminal.
The island contains pipelines, storage tanks, and loading systems. These facilities support large-scale oil shipments.
In addition, Kharg Island sits near the Strait of Hormuz. This route handles a large share of global oil transport.
Regional Tensions Add Pressure
The spill comes at a sensitive time in the region. As a result, global attention on the area has increased.
Kharg Island remains vital for Iran’s economy. This is especially true under ongoing sanctions and trade pressure.
However, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the spill yet. Meanwhile, satellite systems continue to track its movement.
