World Press Freedom Day: Leader Hameed Lone Raises Concerns

On World Press Freedom Day, Hurriyat leader Abdul Hameed Lone expressed serious concerns over the condition of journalism and media in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the challenges faced by journalists and stressed the need for greater press freedom in the region.

Media Working Under Pressure in Kashmir

According to Beyond Time News, Abdul Hameed Lone said that journalists in Kashmir continue to perform their duties in extremely difficult and stressful conditions.

He stated that the media environment in the region remains highly restricted, making it challenging for reporters to work independently and freely.

Concerns Over Safety of Journalists

Lone pointed out that since 1990, several journalists have lost their lives while performing professional duties in the region. In addition, he said that working freely as a journalist in Kashmir has become increasingly difficult.

He further alleged that media workers face regular harassment, including raids on homes and questioning by authorities.

Legal Actions and Restrictions

He also claimed that several journalists have faced legal cases under various laws, including charges related to terrorism, sedition, and spreading misinformation.

Moreover, some journalists have reportedly been detained under strict laws, leading to concerns about press freedom in the region.

Migration and Self-Censorship

According to his statement, more than a dozen journalists have left the region due to fear and pressure.

As a result, many reporters now practice self-censorship, avoiding sensitive topics to ensure their safety.
