Experts Call for Higher Tobacco Taxes Ahead of Budget 2026–27

Health and policy experts have called on the government to increase tobacco taxes in the Federal Budget 2026–27 to reduce smoking and boost revenue.

According to Beyond Time News, a seminar organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) stressed the need for stronger, consistent tobacco taxation and reforms in the existing tax structure.

Call for Tax Reforms

Experts urged the removal of the two-tier tax system, saying it encourages smokers to switch to cheaper brands instead of quitting. They recommended moving toward a single, uniform tax structure.

Public Health Concerns

Speakers highlighted rising tobacco use among young people and called for higher taxes on products commonly used by youth, along with stronger awareness campaigns.
