A total of 365 alleged drug-related cases were reported across 58 universities in Pakistan during 2025, highlighting growing concerns over substance use in academic institutions. The cases also included 10 involving support staff.
According to Beyond Time News, the highest number of incidents was recorded in federal universities, followed by Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Breakdown of Reported Cases
- Federal institutions: 153 cases
- Punjab: 130 cases
- Sindh: 75 cases
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 7 cases
The data also indicates reported involvement of female students in some cases, including 28 in Punjab, 10 in federal institutions, and 8 in Sindh. No cases involving faculty members were reported, while no female student cases were recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

HEC Monitoring System
According to Beyond Time News, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has introduced a structured monitoring mechanism to address drug use and smoking in universities.
Anti-Drug and Tobacco Committees have been established in 245 public and private universities nationwide. These committees are responsible for enforcement, awareness efforts, and student guidance. Sub-campuses have also been directed to establish similar committees to ensure consistent implementation.
Parliamentary Oversight
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education has sought detailed reports on drug-related incidents and preventive measures in educational institutions. It has also directed authorities to strengthen monitoring systems and improve enforcement to maintain a safe academic environment.
