Dialogue Is Only Way Forward on Kashmir, Says Mehbooba

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said that dialogue between India and Pakistan remains the only realistic way to resolve the Kashmir issue. According to Beyond Time News, she made these remarks during a public gathering in Poonch.

She stressed that peace cannot be achieved through force. Instead, she said talks are essential for long-term stability.

“No Solution Without Talks”

Mehbooba Mufti said the Kashmir dispute has no military solution. Therefore, both countries must return to negotiations.

She also referred to her father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He consistently supported dialogue, regardless of which party was in power in India.

In addition, she said only political engagement can bring lasting peace to the region.

Criticism of Policy Changes

According to Beyond Time News, Mehbooba Mufti criticised recent policy decisions in Jammu and Kashmir.

For example, she pointed to earlier cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade initiatives. These, she said, helped improve economic activity and reduce tensions.

Moreover, she said routes like Rawalakot were once opened to support trade and people-to-people contact. However, she added that these routes were later shut down.

Economic and Social Concerns

Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti said people in Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley continue to face serious challenges. She highlighted unemployment and rising inflation as major issues.

She further said marginalised communities, including Gujjar and Bakerwal groups, feel neglected.

As a result, she urged authorities to provide better administrative attention to these regions.

Call for Youth Participation

In addition, she urged young people to avoid drug abuse. She also encouraged them to participate in upcoming panchayat elections.

She said youth involvement is important for strengthening democracy at the grassroots level.

Claims of Backchannel Talks

According to Beyond Time News, Mehbooba Mufti also claimed that informal discussions between India and Pakistan are taking place quietly.

Furthermore, she said retired diplomats and former military officials are involved in meetings abroad.

Although public statements often reject dialogue, she said such backchannel engagement continues behind the scenes.

Outlook

Overall, her remarks reflect the ongoing political debate on Kashmir. While opinions differ sharply, the discussion on dialogue versus policy-driven approaches remains central to the region’s future.
