TEHRAN: Iranian state media reported on Saturday that European countries have entered discussions with Tehran over shipping transit through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Beyond Time News.
The development comes as the strategic waterway continues to face disruptions following heightened regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel earlier this year.
Europe Engages Iran on Maritime Access
Iranian state television said European countries have begun talks with Tehran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to secure passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the report did not name the European states involved in the negotiations.
At the same time, Iranian media claimed that ships from China, Japan, and Pakistan have already passed through the strait after separate understandings with Iranian authorities.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Critical Route
The Strait of Hormuz plays a vital role in global energy transport. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes through this narrow sea route during normal trade conditions.
Because of its importance, any disruption in the strait quickly affects global energy prices and supply chains.
Iran has tightened its control over maritime traffic since the conflict escalated in late February. A fragile ceasefire took effect in early April, but tensions in the region remain high.

Iran Expands Control Over Shipping
Iranian authorities say they are introducing a new system to manage maritime traffic in the strait. The IRGC has taken the lead in regulating vessel movement and enforcing compliance with new rules.
Officials in Tehran state that shipping will not return to pre-conflict conditions. Instead, Iran plans to operate a structured permit system that includes service charges for vessels entering the waterway.
Iranian lawmakers also say the system will prioritise commercial ships that cooperate with Tehran’s regulations. They add that non-compliant operators may face restrictions.
Global Markets Watch Developments Closely
Energy markets continue to monitor the situation closely because of the strait’s global importance. Any restriction in shipping can quickly influence oil and gas prices worldwide.
Analysts say even limited disruption can create uncertainty in international trade routes and increase transport costs for import-dependent economies.
Background of Rising Tensions
Maritime restrictions increased after the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel earlier this year. Since then, naval operations and diplomatic contacts have continued alongside each other.
Iran maintains that its actions aim to regulate maritime security and ensure controlled access to one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.
