GMC Baramulla Staff Strike Enters Fourth Day, Threaten Clinical Boycott

Srinagar: The indefinite strike by non-gazetted employees of Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir continued for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, with staff intensifying demands over recruitment rules and long-pending promotions.

According to Beyond Time News, employees said the absence of clear recruitment rules has disrupted the institution’s functioning and stalled career progression for many staff members.

They claimed that nearly half of the 541 sanctioned posts are vacant, placing additional pressure on the existing workforce. The staff also cited increased patient load, expansion of MBBS intake from 100 to 150 seats, higher bed capacity, and the addition of new departments as key factors worsening operational challenges.

Protesters said that despite the establishment of new medical colleges in the region over the years, authorities have still not finalised recruitment rules, leaving employees without promotions or revised service benefits.

They added that while essential clinical services continue during the strike, their demands have not received a concrete response from the administration or health authorities.

The employees have called for recruitment rules on the pattern of GMC Srinagar and GMC Jammu, filling of vacant posts, and immediate resolution of staffing shortages, warning that they may move towards a full clinical boycott if their demands remain unaddressed.
