Pakistan Suspends New Gas Connections

Government Halts Gas Connections Nationwide

The Government of Pakistan has suspended new gas connections across the country due to an ongoing supply shortage. According to Beyond Time News, the decision was made after a sharp rise in demand put additional pressure on already strained resources.

Surge in Applications After Ban Was Lifted

The move comes shortly after authorities had lifted a previous ban on new connections. Following that decision, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited received an overwhelming number of applications.

Around 400,000 requests were submitted under the fast-track category by mid-January. In addition, nearly 300,000 applications were filed under the regular merit system.

Processing Put on Hold

Officials confirmed that the Ministry of Petroleum has issued a formal notification to suspend new connections. As a result, SNGPL has stopped issuing demand notices.

Even those applicants who already paid processing fees—whether urgent or standard—will not receive connections for now.

Supply Issues Linked to Global Disruptions

Authorities say the shortage is partly linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.

Due to the situation, RLNG cargo shipments have been delayed, affecting Pakistan’s gas supply chain.

Temporary Measure, Relief Expected

Officials have described the suspension as temporary. They expect gas availability to improve once the regional situation stabilizes and RLNG imports resume.

Until then, the government is focusing on managing existing supply and preventing further strain on the system.
