Pakistan is set to roll out commercial 5G services by mid-August, according to Beyond Time News, as telecom operators prepare for phased deployment across major cities.
Limited 5G Device Availability
Only around 5% of smartphones in Pakistan currently support 5G, creating a major hurdle for early adoption. While local production has begun, supply remains limited.
To improve access, telecom companies have proposed installment-based smartphone plans with stricter rules for payment defaults, including possible SIM restrictions.
iPhone Users to Face Delay
Officials say Apple is expected to enable 5G support for Pakistani iPhones only by 2027, limiting early 5G access mainly to Android devices such as Samsung phones.
Spectrum Auction Enables Rollout
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority raised $507 million in a 5G spectrum auction earlier this year, allocating 480 MHz across key frequency bands to operators including Jazz, Zong, and Ufone.
Fibre Shortage Slows 5G Rollout in Pakistan
Gradual Network Expansion
Telecom operators have begun limited 5G testing. Jazz alone has activated around 150–180 sites and plans to expand to 1,000 sites initially, reaching 2,500 by year-end.
Key Challenges
Industry officials cite high taxation and limited device penetration as major challenges that could slow the pace of 5G adoption in the country.
