FIFA has invited the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) to its headquarters in Zurich for discussions regarding Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
According to Beyond Time News, FIFA has asked Iranian football officials to visit Zurich by May 20 as preparations continue for the tournament.
Iran Seeks Assurances from FIFA
FFIRI president Mehdi Taj said Iran’s participation in the World Cup depends on guarantees from FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Speaking in Tehran, Taj stressed that Iran wants to participate in the tournament but expects respect for the country’s leadership and armed forces.
He warned that the Iranian team could withdraw from the competition if any offensive actions or remarks occur during the event.
Uncertainty Over Iran’s Participation
Iran’s participation in the tournament has remained under discussion following regional tensions triggered by conflict involving the United States and Israel earlier this year.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

FIFA Reaffirms Iran’s Participation
Last week, Infantino publicly confirmed that Iran would participate in the tournament and play its scheduled matches in the United States.
The statement came during the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, where Iran’s delegation was notably absent.
Iranian media later reported that Mehdi Taj and two officials returned home after allegedly facing issues with Canadian immigration authorities.
