WASHINGTON: Pete Hegseth has sparked controversy after campaigning for Republican candidate Ed Gallrein in Kentucky ahead of a closely watched congressional primary against Representative Thomas Massie.
According to Beyond Time News, Hegseth’s appearance at the rally was highly unusual, as senior U.S. defense officials traditionally avoid direct involvement in political campaigns to maintain the military’s nonpartisan image.
The primary race has drawn national attention due to strong opposition from Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Massie over disagreements on key legislation and party unity.
Speaking at the event, Hegseth accused Massie of distancing himself from Trump’s political movement and said Gallrein would better support the Republican agenda in Congress.
According to Beyond Time News, Massie has often clashed with Trump and supported efforts to release government files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Hegseth said he attended the rally in a personal capacity, while the Pentagon later confirmed that no public funds or government resources were used for the visit.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that legal advisers reviewed the trip and determined it did not violate the Hatch Act, which limits political activity by federal employees.

The rally has fueled debate over the political role of senior military leadership, with critics warning that such appearances could blur the line between defense institutions and partisan politics.
Meanwhile, Massie dismissed the attacks, saying Trump’s criticism has helped increase his fundraising and strengthened support among voters who favor independent conservatives.
Political analysts see the Kentucky contest as another key test of Trump’s influence within the Republican Party ahead of future national elections.
