PMD warns of heavy rains, hailstorms across Pakistan

According to Beyond Time News, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for widespread weather activity across the country from May 2. The department said a fresh westerly wave is likely to enter northwestern Pakistan on the evening of May 2 and may continue affecting upper regions until May 5.

The PMD predicted that this system will bring dust storms, heavy rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds to several areas. It also stated that the ongoing intense heat will begin to ease during this period.

KP Likely to Face the Strongest Impact

The Met Office identified Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as the most affected province. It said many districts, including Swat, Dir, Chitral, Peshawar, Mardan, Abbottabad, Kohat, Bannu, and nearby areas, will likely experience heavy rain, dust storms, and hail from May 2 to May 4.

Authorities also warned that weather conditions may vary with short gaps, but overall activity will remain intense in the region.

Southern Punjab, including Multan, Layyah, and Dera Ghazi Khan, may receive rain and thunderstorms on May 3 and 4. Meanwhile, upper regions like Murree and the Galiyat area are also likely to experience hail and strong winds.

Weather Outlook for Northern and Southern Areas

Gilgit-Baltistan will likely see rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms from May 2 to May 5. Affected areas include Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, and Astore.

Azad Kashmir is also expected to receive heavy rainfall and hailstorms during the same period, especially in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, and Mirpur.

In Balochistan, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in Quetta, Zhob, Chaman, and nearby districts from May 2 to May 4. Upper Sindh may also experience dust storms on May 2 and 3.

Landslide Risk and Climate Outlook

The PMD has warned that landslides may occur in vulnerable mountainous areas of upper KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, especially on May 3 and 4. Authorities have advised caution in these regions.

In a separate update, the PMD stated that El Niño conditions are likely to develop during the 2026 monsoon season (June to September). It added that global climate models show strong agreement on this forecast.
