Lahore: Senior PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique has called for setting aside political differences and building a broader national consensus, saying that rising terrorism and economic challenges require unity across political lines.
Call for Political Reconciliation
Addressing a ceremony in Lahore, the former federal minister urged political parties to reduce tensions and move toward dialogue. He said Pakistan’s political environment needs stability and cooperation, especially in the face of growing security threats and economic pressure.
Saad Rafique said that both government and opposition must work together on key national issues, particularly security and the economy, adding that continued polarization is harming the country’s progress.
Need for National Dialogue
He stressed that political forces should engage with each other rather than remain in confrontation, arguing that parties accepting the Constitution should remain part of the democratic process. He also suggested that dialogue with all stakeholders, including rival political groups, cannot be delayed indefinitely.
Comparing domestic politics with international examples, he said that if adversaries can engage in reconciliation globally, political forces within Pakistan should also be able to sit together.
Local Government and Provincial Issues
The PML-N leader also called for constitutional protection for local governments, saying repeated dissolutions of local bodies have weakened governance and increased public grievances.
While expressing support for administrative reforms, he opposed proposals that focus only on dividing Punjab, stating that all provinces should be treated equally in any restructuring debate.

Remarks on Party Leadership
Saad Rafique defended Nawaz Sharif’s limited public political engagement, saying he has already faced significant political consequences and “paid enough price.”
He added that while many party leaders remain silent, he continues to speak openly on national issues.
Security and National Pride
Concluding his remarks, he highlighted Pakistan’s 1998 nuclear tests, crediting political leadership, scientists, and the armed forces for protecting the country’s nuclear capability despite international pressure and difficult economic conditions at the time.
